Image sourcing and takedown

Past in Color works from photographs in the public domain, sourced from public archives such as the Library of Congress. For every photograph we publish, the product page lists the source archive, the photographer where known, and a rights statement.

Our standards

  • We only publish photographs we believe in good faith to be in the public domain in the United States and the European Union.
  • We do not use photographs of identifiable private individuals in advertising.
  • We credit the holding institution and, where known, the photographer.

Requesting a takedown

If you believe a photograph we offer infringes your rights, or depicts you or a family member in a way you object to, contact us with the product link and the basis of your request. We review every request within five business days, and we remove first and discuss second: if a claim is plausible, the product comes down while we review it.
